Mary Platt: Museum Director, Hilbert Museum of California Art - Epi. 301, Host Dr. Mark Sublette
I had Mary Platt on today. It was a really fun talk because we were at the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University in Orange, CA and she did a walk and talk of the Disney material, and that's her expertise. In fact, she's done a book on that specific area. So this is a great podcast to watch on UA-cam because you can see the paintings and what we're talking about.
We just had a wonderful conversation in the museum, talking about the main animation related exhibit they have at the moment which is on Disney artist and animation pioneer: Mary Blair.
So very interesting, enlightening talk with Mary Platt, Director of the Hilbert Museum of California Art.

I had Tim Peterson on today, and it was really a wonderful podcast. He's an individual I've wanted to have on for very long time. I've had many conversations with him over the years and he's been on the podcast recently, speaking on exhibits at the Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West, but this time I wanted HIS story. This is an individual who is a very serious collector. He's done ...

Thank you
Maybe the “outsider” circus image was a kind of self-portrait, a metaphor for struggling with the challenges and frustrations of working with the “boys’ club.” 🤔
Beautiful ❤
that's why American Indian and mesoamerican cultures are frequently tapped for inspiration in modern art.
It really is incredible. The indigo and red colors, wow.
also ---- we don't have these in Iowa
Very cool mark will you be ordering it from the Met?
I'm going through this right now downsizing my life. Art is so powerful! As an Artist myself I have artwork I've treasured creating throughout my career and could not ever sell it. How do I pass it along now? I remember the sunshine on my face painting a canvas still from 25 years ago. So powerful indeed. So much pure joy. It is so hard.
Perfect reminder as I’m thinking of selling part of my dad’s coin collection. ❤️🩹 It pierces the heart. There are some things I need to pull out and donate for a WWII museum.
Oh I just saw the thumbnail. You get a great view of it. Thanks so much!
Fantastic basket.
👏🫶🏼
Oooh I would love to see that pottery up close. It looked incredible!
Thank you for sharing so much with us!
love the story about Datsolalee (Louisa Keyser) the queen of basketry and often watch the interview you had with Natalie Linn another queen when we talk about Indian baskets. Thank you ❤
America also used to use a gas chambers before the German did
The American Army used the swastika before the Germans did
My Uncle ( Who is buried at Grey Horse ) once said , " I don't know any Indians who can afford Indian art." But he was the Head of the Ponaca Warrior Society and had a large collection of Pendleton blankets. Sir, do you have a store? Respectfully Jeff Jones
I collect both Blankets and Navajo weaving. GREAT interview.
Well done, guys. 👍
Masterful point 🎉🎉🎉
❤
Quite a woman
Incredible artistry!
You don’t mention Europe you don’t mention the Solutreans ? The spare points are nearly identical to the European technology that’s only found in Europe. This doesn’t point to South America as the origins of points to France and Spain. 25 to 36,000 years ago boy. How good do you feel in your career when a guy like me can come across and straighten you right out. You must be proud of yourself.
May this man live a long time; so much information to share!
This reminds me of my grandad's poncho. Probably from after the 50's. He was an Argentinian gaucho 😊
I love these short videos on SW native arts and materials.
Love the double cuffs!
Absolutely breathtaking!
Exquisite.
Yea… no… that’s old. No one made that and said to themselves, better make this look like an old crumbly ass piece of sh*t, that’ll totally increase the value.
Nice
I love your videos, Mark. I’d love to ask a question: a friend of mine has an Ansel Adams portrait of a NA called “Willow;” is this Tony Lujan (Luhan)? She swears it’s a woman but it sure looks like Mabel Dodge’s husband! What say you, Mr Sublette?
Beautiful!!!
My stupid ass thought he said Melanie Martinez. Also we all know what that pattern on the front is. This dude explains this stuff so well tho
I want to make a replication. Anywhere that sells new parts? Or am I gonna have to use "close enough" parts?
Love love ❤❤❤❤❤
Omg that is so gorgeous. I'm curious about the value. I would think quite high. What collector wouldn't want to have that.
Love Arizona animals I saw one of thos only once they are so cute
Whoa, fascinating. Poor birds though. Don't like that.
It’s the Big Dipper circling the northern star. And the National socialists of Germany are NOT what the system has said
Our collective ignorance is why we still consider the swastika to be a German symbol - even though it was only used by them for about 20 years and had been in use for millennia beforehand. The German version is also different from the ancient one.
It's completely understandable, isn't it? The horror of Nazi's and WW2. Racists today use it. It's pounded into our consciousness.
Nice to see how ubiquitous that symbol was before the nazis got their hands on it.
I wear a Navajo armband with the symbol
Ancient Greece used it as well symbolic of luck .
I'm getting a tattoo of it
Buddhism uses that too. Very ancient symbol.
Japan used it as a symbol of peace
I believe it’s means there’s a church, when your looking at maps of Japan
So did the Indoosians & it was also used by the Chinese for kung fu training
I've seen the swastika on asian coins prior to Hitlers nazi regime.
